A gun? Why use a gun when I have a bow!
Hi, I’m Patrick Key one of the newer members of the Intrepid Outdoors Team. When Mike and the Intrepid Staff presented me an opportunity to join the team I jumped at the offer it provided me with an avenue to share my passion for hunting and the great outdoors with a whole lot more people. Intrepid outdoors also has the same beliefs as I do; Ethics, Preservation, Promotion of the sport, and helping our younger generations to enjoy the outdoors and hunting.
I have been an avid archer for 25 plus years now. Several years ago I had a friend ask me if I would like to go archery hunting with him. I thought about it and decided, "Why Not!". I bought my first bow, practiced a lot during the summer and proceeded to spend a lot of time getting close to animals with my bow. This wasn't as easy as I thought it would be! For the first few years I ended up having to resort to my gun to put meat in my freezer. The kids still had to eat! Archery has made me a much better hunter over the years getting to know the game more intimately. People who are avid bow hunters can relate to this. The animals are much smarter than most people can even understand until they have hunted with a bow. This takes the sport of hunting to a whole new level, which I became addicted too. After the first three years that I took up archery it became the weapon of choice and I haven't used another weapon since. I have harvested several elk, deer, and antelope. This year 2009 I took my 16th elk with a bow and I couldn't have been happier. I've also taken one bull moose with my bow, a few years ago.
I have been and still shoot competitively for about 23 years now in local, state, regional and national competitions. My wife and two children (young adults now) have also been very successful with their archery passion. Since I can remember I've been trying to involve kids in this passion of mine! I have been a JOAD, youth archery coach as well as an adult coach for several years. I am also the owner of an archery hunting store in Wyoming(Wyoming Archery And Hunting Supplies)and have been for 9 years. This is my story so far and the future looks great!
