I was born in Columbus Ohio, and was lucky enough to have a Dad that not only introduced me to the Outdoors, but also gave me the skills in the construction business to afford me the time to go hunting and fishing as often as I could. I was no different than a lot of guy’s who had the dream of making a living out of a hobby. The only difference is, I sacrificed a whole lot of money and time to make my dream come true.
My initial goal was to start a career in Wildlife Management, so I enrolled at Hocking College located in Nelsonville, Ohio where I attended for my two year degree in Wildlife Management. Before I left school, I had the water thrown in my face which woke me up to the sad fact that most of the jobs available back in 1991, paid less than $7.00 an hour, and most of those were jobs emptying trash cans at a local state park. So I went back to my original career of Remodeling, and custom homes. It was this decision that gave me my own business, where at the drop of a hat, I could just take off and go hunting.
My first step in the direction of ending up as the Producer of Intrepid Outdoors, was taking the time to film hunts as often as I could with family and friends. Back then I used an old VHS camcorder that cost around $600. Today I couldn’t give that old camera away, but it used to be “top of the line”. These days we have evolved into the high definition digital era, which allows just about anyone the opportunity to go out and capture great footage with a camera that is affordable to just about anyone. This new technology has also flooded the TV networks with new hunting and fishing shows.
I, unlike a lot of folks in this business, watch hunting shows 90% of the time I spend looking at a TV. I don’t watch football, motor sports, horse racing, baseball, soccer, or any other popular sport. Don’t get me wrong, I played football, Wrestled, ran Track, Cross Country, and even made it to the State tournament a couple of times. The point I’m trying to make is that I live for Hunting, especially bowhunting, and have pursued the opportunity, to turn it into a job, very hard for the last 6 years. I got my foot in the door by becoming a pretty good hunter, taking several Pope & Young animals during my hunting career. This allowed me to come in contact with several other well known hunters that enabled me to start a contact list that a lot of hunters could only dream of.
My first real chance at doing this for a living, came when I joined up with Bighorn Outdoors, and became the only camera man that would sacrifice money, time at home, and my own time in the woods, to help what I thought was a sure way to draw a paycheck in the outdoor TV industry. I never saw that paycheck, but I was able to meet the right guys that had the same ideas as I did about the business. Our team of committed hunters includes Mike Schmid, Jim Sessions, and Dean Taylor. We all agreed that we were sick of watching hunters acting like comedians, or showing themselves eat dinner, or playing the guitar. We like seeing hunts, better yet; we like seeing hunts unfold as they happened in real time over the shoulder. We like learning something as we watch, not watching hunters act. Our solution was to start our own show, because that’s what people do when you want to change something. To complain is easy, to make a change, requires devoted people. I believe we have the right people to make it happen.
We teamed up with Aaron Coston of Midwest Media Productions and in just 3 short months have secured a spot on the Pursuit Channel on Direct TV, starting in October of 2008. Getting the footage was not a problem. We all had several, never before seen, hunts in the can, and was able to put together a line up better than most of the “Top Shows” on television. Hunts like Self-Guided Mountain Goats in Colorado and Wyoming, Desert Bighorn in Mexico, Self-Guided Trophy Whitetails in Kansas, Ohio, and Wyoming. These hunts include everything from Long-Range Shooting to up close, in your face bowhunts.
If you have any Constructive criticism on the show, please let us know. If you have a question on how to get started on your own DIY hunt, feel free to contact me or anyone of our guy's, and we'll do our best to get you headed in the right direction.
We believe that there are plenty of people out there that feel the same way we do, and we hope to fill the void with real "Fair Chase" hunting. If you disagree, please feel free to let us know why. Thanks for visiting our site!
Sincerely,
Bob Lott
